Classroom furniture isn’t one-size-fits-all – literally. At ABAL Educational Supplies we use a simple colour-coding system for tables and chairs so Irish schools can match the right size furniture to every age group.
Why furniture size matters
Correctly sized furniture improves posture, comfort, concentration, handwriting and overall classroom behaviour. When tables are too high or chairs too low pupils lean, perch and fidget; when the sizing is right they can focus on learning.
The ABAL colour-coding system
- Yellow – Size B: table 550mm, chair 300mm, typically Senior Infants–1st Class.
- Red – Size C: table 600mm, chair 350mm, typically 1st–3rd Class.
- Blue – Size D: table 650mm, chair 390mm, typically 3rd–5th Class.
- Green – Size E: table 700mm, chair 440mm, typically 5th–6th Class.
- Dark blue/grey – Size F: chair 460mm, for secondary and taller pupils.
- White frame tables: 750mm high for senior and staff use.
The colour is on the frames, so staff can see sizes instantly when setting up or moving furniture.
Pupils desks and single student desks
Our standard pupils desks are available in the four main colour-coded sizes (Yellow, Red, Blue, Green). They have welded steel frames and can be used in rows, pods or pairs. You can add top-loading baskets that hold two stacks of A4 books to keep desks clear.
The Single Student Desk uses the same colour system and is ideal for exam halls, SEN rooms and any situation where an individual workspace is needed.
Circular tables
For group work, our welded frame circular tables come in five colour-coded height options with a 1200mm diameter top. They are also available with wooden frames in four colour-coded sizes.
Heavy duty poly chairs

Our stackable poly chairs are available in six colour-coded sizes from 300mm to 460mm seat height. They are extremely robust, easy to clean, light enough for pupils to move and can be stacked neatly when floors need to be cleared.
Multi-grade and ASD classrooms
In multi-grade rooms it is easy to mix sizes – for example mostly red chairs with some blue for taller pupils. In ASD and resource rooms staff can quickly pick the most suitable size for each pupil. Our dedicated ASD workstations are also available in multiple height options.
Simple to manage, easy to order
The real strength of the ABAL colour-coding system is how easy it is to use day to day. Teachers can request furniture by colour, principals can audit classrooms at a glance and caretakers know exactly what needs to move where. When it is time to order, you simply tell us the colours and quantities you need.
